5.4M Earthquake from Megathrust Zone Hits Sumatran Regency, BMKG Reports

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 on the southern coast of West Nias Regency, North Sumatra, on Wednesday evening, May 7, 2025, at 2:09:08 p.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

BMKG's director of earthquake and tsunami, Daryono, said the earthquake was centered in the Megathrust zone of Siberut Mentawai. The offshore earthquake occurred at 0.71 degrees North Latitude and 97.24 degrees East Longitude, 37 kilometers southwest of West Nias, at a depth of 22 kilometers.

"The earthquake was triggered by the subduction activity of the Indo-Australian Plate under the Eurasian Plate," said Daryono in a written statement on Wednesday. BMKG's analysis results indicate that this earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.

The earthquake was felt in the areas of West Nias and South Nias with a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale of IV, meaning the tremor was experienced by many people indoors. In the Nias, Mount Sitoli, and North Nias areas, the quake was felt with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI.

"Modeling results show that this earthquake does not possess tsunami threats," said Daryono.

BMKG noted that as of 2:26 p.m., no aftershock activity was detected. The public is advised to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable information.

Furthermore, Daryono suggested avoiding buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake. "Check and ensure that your residence is earthquake-resistant or no damage occurred that could jeopardize the stability of the building before returning inside," he said.
