Arab League Says Israel Wants to Destabilize Lebanon, Syria

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, accused Israel of trying to destabilize Syria and Lebanon through military provocations. He also alleged that Israel is disregarding international legal norms.

In a statement on Saturday, April 5, 2025, Aboul Gheit said that global indecisiveness has emboldened Israel. "The war launched by Israel in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Syria has entered a new phase of total recklessness, deliberately breaching signed agreements, invading countries, and killing more civilians," said Gheit in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency, cited from Arab News.

Gheit stated that the targeted killings by Israel in Lebanon are unacceptable violations and condemnations of the ceasefire agreement signed with Lebanon late last year.

According to Gheit, Israel's actions are driven by narrow domestic agendas at the expense of civilian lives and regional peace. "It seems that the Israeli war machine does not want to stop as long as the occupation leaders insist on facing their internal crises by exporting them abroad, and this situation has become clear to everyone," he said.

According to the Gaza Ministry of Health last week, over 50,600 Palestinians have died and more than 113,200 have been injured in Israel's attacks in the Palestinian territories in retaliation for Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, in southern Israel.

In Lebanon, war monitors said that at least 3,961 people were killed and 16,520 were injured in the war between Israel and the Hezbollah movement from October 8, 2023, to November 26, 2024.

Additionally, the new Syrian government accused Israel on April 3 of launching a deadly destabilization campaign following a wave of attacks on military targets, including an airport, and a ground attack that killed 13 people in the southern province of Daraa.
