TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A group of gunmen opened fire on dozens of tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. At least 26 people were killed, according to Indian police as reported by Al Jazeera.
Police said scores of tourists sustained bullet wounds in the Tuesday terror attack, while visiting the Baisaran meadow, about 5 kilometers from the resort town of Pahalgam in the disputed territory.
“This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the top elected official in the region, wrote on social media.
Indian police said that at least 26 people were killed. Citing Al Jazeera, Kashmir Resistance claimed responsibility for the attack on social media.
Most of the tourists killed were Indians. A tour guide in Pahalgam said that he approached the scene after hearing gunshots. He helped transport some of the injured on horseback. Waheed, who gave only one name, said he saw several men lying lifeless on the ground. Another witness said that the shooters were “clearly sparing women.”
Divashi Shorba, an Indian tourist, said he had come from Kolkata. “We are just 10 kilometers away from Pahalgam. It’s been four hours since we were stopped, and no one has any clear information,” he said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised to bring the attackers to justice. The leader, who is on a formal visit to Saudi Arabia, condemned the heinous act.
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday pledged his support for India. “Deeply disturbing news out of Kashmir,” he said on social media on Tuesday. “The United States stands strong with India against Terrorism.”
The Indian government said that Trump called Modi to offer his condolences.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemned the attack, stating that attacks against civilians are “unacceptable under any circumstances.”
