TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to temporarily halt the imposition of tariffs. As reported by Antara, von der Leyen referred to it as an important step towards global economic stabilization.
In a statement on Thursday, April 10, 2025, von der Leyen emphasized the critical need for clear and predictable conditions to ensure the smooth functioning of trade and supply chains.
She said tariffs are taxes that only harm businesses and consumers, emphasizing her longstanding advocacy for a "zero-for-zero" tariff deal between the European Union (EU) and the U.S.
She added that the EU remains committed to constructive negotiations with the U.S. to achieve smooth and mutually beneficial trade.
Von der Leyen highlighted Europe's ongoing efforts to diversify global trade partnerships, involving countries that account for 87 percent of world trade.
According to her, these partnerships are in line with the EU's commitment to free and open exchange of goods, services, and ideas.
Von der Leyen said, Europe is finally stepping up its efforts to remove barriers in our single market. She described the single market as an "anchor of stability and resilience" during global uncertainty.
She assured Europeans that her team would continue to work tirelessly to protect Europeans' interests. Together, she said, Europeans will emerge stronger from this crisis.
On Wednesday, Trump announced a 90-day tariff truce. However, China is not included in this truce and is experiencing a tariff hike to 125 percent.
