TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google is reportedly launching a new feature that will enable users to virtually try on clothing using artificial intelligence (AI). The feature is currently being tested in Search Labs for users in the United States.
Previously, users could only view clothing on various models, but the new feature lets them upload a photo of themselves to see how the clothing would look on their own bodies.
After joining the experiment, users can click the “try it on” button in search results for items like pants, shirts, dresses, and skirts.
Google will request a full-body photo and generate an image showing the user wearing the selected item. This image can then be saved or shared.
According to an official statement from Google, as quoted by The Verge on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the feature uses AI models that understand the human body and the behavior of clothing materials, including how different fabrics fold, stretch, and drape across various body shapes.
In addition to the virtual try-on, Google is also introducing a new way to shop through AI Mode, a Gemini-based search experience that has been expanding since March. This feature enables users to search for products in a more personalized and conversational manner.
For example, if a user tells the AI they are looking for a bag suitable for a trip to Portland, Oregon in May, the system will generate customized recommendations.
Google explains that AI Mode can handle multiple queries at once to refine search results based on user needs. It can, for instance, determine that the user requires a waterproof bag with multiple pockets for rainy conditions.
In the coming months, Google also plans to launch an "agentic checkout" feature. Currently, users can tap “track price” on a product, select size, color, and preferred price, and receive notifications when the price drops.
Eventually, users will be able to confirm purchase details and select the “buy for me” option. Google will then complete the transaction on the retailer’s site and process the payment securely using Google Pay.
