Governor Says Weather Modification Eased Jakarta Flood Damage

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the recent floods in the capital could have been far worse without the implementation of weather modification operations (WMO). He noted that the rainfall in the city had exceeded 300 millimeters per day.

“If it had been left unattended two to three days ago, Jakarta would surely have experienced a tremendous flood,” Pramono said during a discussion hosted by IKA Fikom Unpad in South Jakarta on Monday, January 26, 2026.

The former Cabinet Secretary added that while WMO had previously been conducted only once, his administration has carried out the operation four times, though he did not specify the exact timeframe of these interventions.

Pramono also commented on the state of flooding in the Jakarta metropolitan area. By Monday, January 26, floodwaters in the city had begun to recede, but surrounding areas were still affected.

“Why did Jakarta flood while other areas did not? I apologize, but the facilities here must be better,” he said.

To mitigate future flooding, Pramono outlined plans to normalize three rivers: the Ciliwung, Cakung Lama, and Kali Krukut. Residents living along these rivers will be relocated as part of the normalization efforts, which are set to begin this year.

“The political decision has been made. The funds are ready,” he said, without disclosing the total budget. He emphasized that long-term flood management in Jakarta cannot rely solely on WMO.

The heavy rains that hit Jakarta and its surrounding areas on Thursday, January 22, 2026, caused widespread flooding. According to the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), all floodwaters in the capital had receded by early Monday morning.

Mohamad Yohan, Head of Data and Information Center at BPBD, said in a written statement that monitoring at 03:00 AM local time confirmed the receding of floodwaters.

“BPBD recorded that as of Monday at 03:00 AM, all inundations in the DKI Jakarta area have receded,” he said.
