India-Pakistan Conflict: Trump Hopes Clashes End 'Very Quickly'

14 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, JakartaU.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday night, May 6, 2025, that he hopes the fighting between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan will end "very quickly" after New Delhi's forces launched an attack and Islamabad vowed to retaliate.

"It’s a shame, we just heard about it," Trump said at the White House as reported by Arab News, after the Indian government claimed to have struck "terrorist camps" in its western neighbor's territory following a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir.

“I just hope it ends very quickly,” Trump said.

"I guess people knew something was going to happen based on the past. They’ve been fighting for many, many decades and centuries, actually, if you really think about it," he added. India's attack targeting several cities in Pakistan killed 8 people, injured 35, and left two others missing.

The Pakistan Air Force retaliated by shooting down five Indian fighter jets on Wednesday. According to a Pakistani security source, the Indian jets were shot down "while attempting to strike Pakistan using Indian airspace."

The jets included three Rafale aircraft, MiG-29, and one SU-30, the source said.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.

Both claim full control of Kashmir but manage separate parts of the disputed region.

India is widely expected to retaliate after gunmen shot dead 26 tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir, mostly Hindus.

New Delhi blamed militants it says came from the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, a UN-designated terrorist organization.

The Pakistan military said India's attack targeted three locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and two locations in Punjab, the country's most populous province.

India's attack came hours after the U.S. State Department issued a fresh call for the nuclear-armed neighbors to exercise restraint.

“We continue to urge Pakistan and India to work toward a responsible resolution that maintains long-term peace and regional stability in South Asia,” U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce told reporters.

Her statement came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned to stop the flow of water across the border following the Kashmir attacks.
