TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, announced that the government has established three task forces to speed up negotiations on reciprocal import tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The move was based on a directive from President Prabowo Subianto.
"The President has approved the formation of three task forces," Airlangga said during a press conference at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, April 28.
The three units include the Task Force on Trade, Investment, and Economic Security Negotiations; the Task Force on Job Expansion and Layoff Mitigation; and the Task Force on Policy Deregulation.
Minister Airlangga explained that the Trade, Investment, and Economic Security Task Force is responsible for following up on investment talks with the U.S. The Job Expansion and Layoff Mitigation Task Force, he said, had been prepared well in advance. The Policy Deregulation Task Force aims to improve the investment climate and streamline business licensing procedures.
The minister emphasized that the government’s negotiations with the U.S. seek a win-win solution that benefits both countries. He also noted that the President has instructed officials not to single out any particular nation in the process.
"Geopolitically, the U.S. views Indonesia as an important partner," said Airlangga, the former chair of the Golkar Party.
Previously, Airlangga had stated that the government would form a Policy Deregulation Task Force, as instructed by the President, to anticipate the impact of Trump’s tariff policy. One of its goals is to ease domestic content requirements (TKDN) regulations.
"The President’s directive covered everything; from exports and imports to TKDN, especially in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector," Airlangga said during an April 14 press conference at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
The idea of establishing a Job Expansion and Layoff Mitigation Task Force first emerged in December 2024 following the 6.5 percent hike in the provincial minimum wage. At that time, Airlangga said the government would create a task force to help prevent mass layoffs resulting from the wage increase.
"The government will set up a task force to address layoffs," Airlangga told reporters on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at Hotel Mulia in Jakarta.
