TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian rendang and gulai have secured high spots in TasteAtlas's list of the "100 Best Stews in the World" for April 2025. TasteAtlas, an online encyclopedia of traditional global cuisine, announced the rankings via its social media platforms.
The announcement proclaimed, "These are the best stews in the world!"
Rendang and gulai were ranked sixth and tenth, respectively. The top five positions were claimed by Malaysian chicken curry, Thai Phanaeng Curry, Armenian Dzhash, Indian Murgh Makhani, and Japanese Kare Raisu.
According to its website, TasteAtlas compiles its rankings based on the opinions of its global community, alongside assessments of the quality and authenticity of traditional dishes. Other culinary delights rounding out the top 10 include Thai Massaman Curry, Indian Keema, and Turkish Hünkar Beendi. The strong representation of Asian cuisine is evident in these top rankings.
Rendang and Gulai
TasteAtlas describes rendang as an Indonesian meat dish that originated among the Minangkabau people in West Sumatra. This dish is celebrated for its rich, spicy flavor and its extended cooking process. Often compared to Indian curry due to its consistency and distinctive taste, rendang's generous use of spices and long cooking time historically helped preserve the meat in hot, tropical climates like Indonesia.
Gulai, meanwhile, is a spicy Indonesian dish resembling a stew or a thick soup. Its appearance and taste often lead to it being called an Indonesian curry. Gulai's versatility allows it to be made with various proteins, including offal and seafood, as well as vegetables.
Similar to rendang, the ingredients for gulai are simmered in a blend of coconut milk and spices until the sauce thickens. Originating in Sumatra, likely influenced by Indian culinary traditions, gulai is now enjoyed across various regions of Indonesia.
TasteAtlas has meticulously cataloged over 10,000 foods and beverages, with thousands more, including lesser-known or nearly forgotten local traditional foods, currently under review and being mapped. The platform's mission is to document the world's culinary heritage, encompassing dishes from cities, regions, and rural areas alike.
