Jakarta May Day: Prabowo Addresses Challenges in Phasing Out Outsourcing

3 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto responded to the demand to erase the outsourcing system with a serious yet relaxed tone during his speech at the International May Day commemoration at the National Monument (Monas), Central Jakarta, on Thursday, May 1, 2025. It is one of the workers' demands this May Day.

Prabowo mentioned that he understands workers' demand to erase outsourcing. However, he asked that it be realistically studied, while considering the investment climate.

"I will also ask the National Workers Welfare Council to quickly pursue how we can, if not immediately, as soon as possible, erase outsourcing. But, my brothers and sisters, we also have to be realistic," Prabowo said while emphasizing the investment aspect at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, May 1, 2025.

According to Prabowo, maintaining a balance between protecting workers' rights and providing certainty for investors is a significant challenge. "If they (investors) do not invest, there will be no factories. If there are no factories, you cannot work," Prabowo said.

Prabowo made this statement in front of thousands of workers from various confederations who filled the Monas area. In his speech, Prabowo also mentioned the formation of the National Workers Welfare Council and his commitment to approving the Asset Forfeiture Bill and the Domestic Workers Protection Bill.

With his typical style that often mixes humor, Prabowo tried to lighten the mood while warning against responding to workers' demands. "We have to work together with them (investors)," he said.

Erasing outsourcing is one of the workers' targets in this year's May Day celebration. This was conveyed by the President of the Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI) and the President of the Labor Party, Said Iqbal, in the six important issues presented to President Prabowo Subianto.

Furthermore, Said stated that the demands also include protecting the rights of domestic workers through the enactment of the Domestic Workers Protection Bill (PPRT). Next, eradicating corruption through the Asset Forfeiture Bill.
