Maarten Paes Joins Garuda Squad for Training Camp Ahead Home Match Against China

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team is now fully assembled with 30 players after Maarten Paes joined the training camp in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. The Garuda squad is gearing up for their home match against China for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Thursday.

The news of Paes' arrival was conveyed through the Indonesian national team's Instagram stories, with Paes expressing his joy at arriving in Indonesia. He has spent the past week playing for his club, FC Dallas, in two Major League Soccer matches against Cincinnati (3-3) and Philadelphia Union (0-0).

"Good morning, Garuda fans. Finally, I'm here. Happy to be here. Let's get it started," said Maarten.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper is the last player to join the squad that will play the last two matches of the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against China on Thursday, June 5, and Japan on Tuesday, June 10.

The Garuda team was gathered first in Bali, for a week-long training camp with 28 players participating. On Monday, they held their first training session in Jakarta, with 29 players joining, including Kevin Diks, who was absent in Bali.

The China match will be missing Maarten Paes, since he's serving a suspension for the accumulation of two yellow cards he received against Saudi Arabia in September last year and Bahrain in March.

With Maarten's absence, the Como goalkeeper on loan to Palermo, Emil Audero, is expected to make his debut. "I'm preparing for the match as usual. I focus on training, and all my friends have had very good training sessions," said Emil when approached by the media at the national team's first training session on Monday.
