TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has warned Indonesian migrant workers to be cautious of fraud. According to Friderica Widysari Dewi, the Chief Executive of OJK's Supervisor of Financial Business Actors Behavior, Education, and Consumer Protection, many migrant workers become victims of fraud and cannot return to Indonesia because of debt.
"These men and women from Indonesia are generally kind and friendly. Whenever they are asked for help, they always help. So be careful if someone there asks, 'May I borrow your name to apply for a loan? I swear I will pay you back,' and more. Be careful," said Friderica during the Financial Education for Indonesian Migrant Workers event at the Dhanapala Building, Jakarta, on Monday, April 21, 2025.
Friderica mentioned several fraudulent schemes that one must be cautious of. One example is when perpetrators use the victim's name to open an account for criminal activities. She also mentioned the love scam, a fraudulent scheme that uses the guise of a romantic relationship.
In addition to abroad, Friderica urges workers to be vigilant against fraud within the country. "Because we also hear some about victims getting scammed, not when overseas, but when they return to Indonesia. They met someone at the airport, and their money is gone because they were offered illegal investment, scam investment, and more," she said.
Friderica then stated that although migrant workers are often referred to as foreign exchange heroes, they must prepare their finances for the future. Therefore, she emphasized the importance of financial education for migrant workers to equip them for the future.
In the same event, the Minister for the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, Abdul Kadir Karding, emphasized that the country must protect migrant workers. "We must not let PMIs (migrant workers) be called foreign exchange heroes, but the country does not show up in efforts to serve and protect them," he said. He also appreciated the OJK and Bank Indonesia for organizing this educational event.
