TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Philippines will launch a digital nomad visa for foreign nationals who wish to visit and work remotely in the country. This initiative comes after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order 86 approving the new visa for non-immigrant foreign nationals on April 24, 2025.
The digital nomad visa will allow qualified foreigners to stay in the country for up to one year. It also supports longer stays and spending, especially during the off-peak seasons for tourists in the country.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco referred to this initiative as a progressive policy that underlines the government's commitment to digitalization and innovation in tourism. Additionally, it aims to position the country as a competitive destination for the growing global digital nomad community.
''Providing the opportunity for digital migrants to stay longer in this country will drive tourism activities and increase visitor spending,'' said Frasco, as quoted in the Philippine News Agency's report from Philstar.
She hopes that digital nomads can help stabilize the tourism sector by visiting during off-peak periods, thus making the economic activity flow more consistent. "These types of international visitors also bring diverse perspectives and cultures, enriching our host communities,'' Frasco said.
Popular destinations such as Boracay, Siargao, Cebu, Palawan, and La Union are expected to benefit from this program. Apart from popular destinations, the Department of Tourism hopes this initiative will open new opportunities for less-visited tourist spots and local government units.
"With unparalleled natural beauty, dynamic culture, and the warmth of the Filipino people, the Philippines is ready to welcome digital migrants to travel, work, and thrive across our archipelago,'' Frasco said.
Requirements for the digital nomad visa
The Philippine digital nomad visa program will officially commence a pilot phase between late May and late July this year. Those interested in applying for the visa must be at least 18 years old, show evidence of remote work using digital technology, and have sufficient income earned outside the Philippines, and have an unblemished criminal record, the office said.
If qualified, digital nomad visa holders can stay in the Philippines for up to one year, with the possibility of renewal for the same duration. Double-entry privileges are also available during the visa's validity period.
Here are the requirements for applying for the Philippine digital nomad visa:
- At least 18 years old,
- Show evidence of remote work using digital technology,
- Demonstrate sufficient income generated outside the Philippines,
- Have a valid health insurance during the visa period,
- Be a citizen of a country offering reciprocal nomad visas to Filipinos and where the Philippines has foreign service posts,
- Pose no security threat to the Philippines
- Not be employed by a Filipino company.
