Prabowo to Attend Groundbreaking of US$7bn EV Battery Plant in North Maluku

1 day ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to attend the groundbreaking for the construction of an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant in East Halmahera, North Maluku. This information was conveyed by the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, during the opening of the Human Capital Summit 2025 forum at JCC Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025.

Bahlil said the groundbreaking ceremony will take place this month. "In June, we will make the first groundbreaking for the world's first electric car battery with investments worth US$6 billion to US$7 billion, from upstream to downstream," he said.

The project is part of the national strategic program called the Indonesia Grand Package, aiming to develop a domestic EV battery supply chain from upstream to downstream.

According to Bahlil, this initiative is the first of its kind since it integrates the entire EV battery production process. The estimated investment value is around US$7 billion, or equivalent to Rp114 trillion.

Bahlil maintained that the development of the EV battery ecosystem is not only valuable economically, but also geopolitically and industrially. He mentioned that Indonesia now has a strategic role in the global electric battery supply chain, especially due to the control of important mineral resources such as nickel.

"Several European countries have requested that battery cell production be done near their factories. I said, feel free to make the cells there, but the raw materials must still come from Indonesia," said Bahlil.
