TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ruben Amorim has delivered an apology to the supporters of Manchester United for the poor results in the English Premier League this season. He urges the supporters to unite and not blame each other after a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa concluded the worst season in the Premier League.
Amorim also expressed gratitude for the supporters' backing throughout the 2024-2025 season. "First of all, I want to apologise for this season. I want to say thank you, we are very grateful for your support during the season and I know it was really hard to support us in many games.," said Amorim in his speech after the match, as quoted by ESPN.
Four days after losing in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur in Bilbao, Manchester United finished in fifteenth place in the Premier League standings. This is the club's lowest league position since being relegated to the second division in the 1973-1974 Premier League standings.
Manchester United has been through a tough time. Aside from on-field issues, problems also arose off the pitch due to fans' protests against the club's ownership and hundreds of job cuts at Old Trafford.
Amorim urged the fans to move forward after delivering the apology. "Now we have to make a choice: either we remain stuck in the past because this season has passed. It's finished. We fight each other, or we unite and move forward," said the Portuguese coach.
Amorim took over Manchester United last November after leaving Sporting CP as the Portuguese League champion. He replaced the sacked Erik ten Hag. Amorim said it's time to focus on a brighter future. "Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said to you, the storm is coming," he said.
"Today after this disastrous season, I want to tell you the good days are coming. If there is one club in the world that proves in the past that can overcome any situation, any disaster, it is our club, Manchester United Football Club."
"Now I want to say sorry also to my players. Sometimes I was not fair, but I try always to be honest with you guys. Thank you very much, see you next season," said Amorim.
