TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police in Vancouver, Canada stated that several people were killed and many others injured after a vehicle crashed into a crowd at a street festival on Saturday night.
A black SUV with a crumpled front section could be seen in photos from the scene which are circulating in the internet.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 p.m. near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party was taking place.
As reported by Sky News, the police stated that the driver has been arrested.
People were in the area near 41st Avenue and Fraser Street to attend the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, named after the national hero of the Philippines, according to local media.
Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim said in a post on X, "I am shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific incident at the Lapu Lapu Day event today."
He added, "Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver's Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time."
In a post on X, the Vancouver Police Department stated that further information will be released as the investigation continues.
Earlier, videos uploaded on social media showed emergency officers at the scene, with several people lying on the ground - some appeared to be injured.
CBC News has reached out to the Vancouver police for further comments.
The NDP party had campaigned at the festival the day before.
In a statement posted on X, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said that he was "shocked to learn of the incident at the Lapu Lapu Day celebration in Vancouver that has injured and killed innocent people."
He said his thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the Filipino community in Vancouver.
