TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Three people were killed in a shooting incident in a city north of the Sweden's capital on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the police said, the latest of such incidents that have shaken the Nordic country.
The police said they received reports of a shooting in the center of Uppsala, about 60 kilometers north of the capital, Stockholm. "A certain number of people have been found with wounds that could have resulted from a shooting," the police said, as quoted by France 24.
In their latest statement, the police said, "three people are confirmed deceased following a shooting," adding that they have opened a murder investigation.
Public broadcaster SVT reported that witnesses said a suspect had fled on a scooter, prompting a major effort to find the shooter.
Police helicopters were involved in the search, police spokesperson Magnus Jansson Klarin told TV4.
Broadcaster TV4 said the shots were fired inside a hair salon in the center of the city.
The incident occurred on the night before the Walpurgis spring festival, which brings many people to the streets of Uppsala, a city located north of the capital, Stockholm, and known for its university.
"Everything happened so fast. It just went bang, bang, bang," a witness told Sweden's TV4 channel.
Another man said he was cooking at home when he heard "two bangs that sounded a bit like fireworks" going off outside on the street.
He told Swedish television that he was "very surprised and scared," and shortly after, "swarms of police and ambulances" started to block the street and tell people to step back.
Train services were briefly halted in the area to prevent the shooter from using them to escape, Klarin said, but the services have now resumed.
Police officers have been visiting homes to collect more witness accounts.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer described the incident to TV4 as a "brutal act of violence."
In an update on their website, Swedish police acknowledged "concern among the public" ahead of the upcoming Walpurgis celebrations, but their initial assessment was that this was an "isolated incident" and "no danger to the public."
The Nordic country has been struggling in recent years to control shootings and bombings linked to revenge between rival criminal gangs.
One of the victims in this incident is being investigated for an alleged planned attack on a gang leader's relative, Sweden's national broadcaster SVT reported.
Perpetrators are often teenagers hired as hitmen because they are under 15 years old, the criminal responsibility age in Sweden.
Swedish police said in January that the number of shootings had decreased in 2024 for the second consecutive year, with 296 shootings - a 20 percent decrease compared to the previous year.
In February, 10 people were killed in a shooting at an adult education center in the city of Orebro, Sweden.
