Social Minister: 65 Sekolah Rakyat Set to Operate This Year

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, announced that 65 Sekolah Rakyat or People's Schools are ready to commence operations this year. These schools are projected to accommodate approximately 6,800 students from underprivileged families.

This number has increased from the previously planned 53 locations set to open in early July. "We are still in the process; around 35 more are being studied, and it's possible that over 30 will be deemed feasible," Gus Ipul stated after the Ministerial Coordination Meeting on People's School Infrastructure and Facilities at the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

He added that if the Ministry of Public Works declares these additional 35 locations feasible, the total number of students attending these schools could reach up to 10,000. The Ministry of Social Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works, is diligently working to meet the target of 100 operational locations by July 2025.

"Each people's school accommodates 100 students, though some accommodate 50. Hopefully, we can still add more than the current 65," Gus Ipul remarked.

At the same event, Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian affirmed his ministry's support for the realization of People's Schools through coordination with regional governments. He emphasized that these schools are closely linked to regional governments, particularly concerning land, permits, access roads, water, and electricity. "Cooperation with regional governments is also required for teachers and students," he said.

Tito noted that local governments have proposed candidate locations for the establishment of these schools, totaling 351 proposed sites across 24 provinces and 298 regencies/cities. "However, we need to assess whether their proposals meet the criteria," he explained.
