TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The celebration of Eid al-Fitr in Gaza is filled with deep sadness. Israel continues to attack Gaza, killing dozens of people as they celebrate Eid. There are no signs that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will reduce pressure on Hamas amid a new round of ceasefire negotiations.
As reported by Al Jazeera, several early Sunday airstrikes hit tents and homes as Palestinians were celebrating Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the Ramadan fasting month. Eid al-Fitr in Gaza falls on Sunday, March 30, 2025. At least 35 people died in the southern cities of Rafah and Khan Younis.
The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) found the bodies of 15 medical workers in Rafah, who were targeted by intense Israeli gunfire last week. Al Jazeera's fact-checking office, Sanad, obtained exclusive satellite images showing that the Israeli military destroyed at least five rescue vehicles in the deadly attack.
On Sunday morning, hundreds of thousands of Palestinians in Gaza performed Eid al-Fitr prayers on the ruins of a destroyed mosque. Overcrowded shelters left no space to celebrate the holiday due to the ongoing Israeli war.
According to Anadolu, Israeli airstrikes continued into early Sunday, targeting various areas in the besieged enclave, resulting in casualties. Despite the damage, Palestinian refugees gathered amidst artillery and intense gunfire from Israeli forces to perform their prayers. They continued chanting takbir and exchanging greetings for Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan. However, usual holiday traditions such as sharing sweets, giving gifts to children, and celebrating in the town square were absent.
In Gaza City, thousands of people prayed inside the destroyed Great Omari Mosque, which was not spared from Israeli attacks.
Meanwhile, in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, displaced Palestinians performed Eid al-Fitr prayers in temporary shelters at a school, accommodating families from the eastern areas of the city.
More than 50,200 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 114,000 have been injured in Israel's brutal military strikes in Gaza since October 2023.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces charges of genocide in the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
