TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Donald Trump administration is preparing to deport Iranian migrants from the United States, marking the first such flights since a nationwide uprising in Iran earlier this month left thousands dead, according to NDTV.
The planned deportations follow months of large-scale protests in Iran, which escalated in early January, and come despite previous threats by Trump to launch military strikes in response to Tehran’s crackdown—a threat later withdrawn after Iran suspended planned executions.
The National Iranian-American Council (NIAC) condemned the move. “The same administration that promised Iranians that 'help is on the way' amid a deadly crackdown is now forcibly sending Iranians back into danger,” said NIAC president Jamal Abdi.
A diplomat representing Tehran’s interests in the U.S., Abolfazl Mehrabadi, told Iran’s official news agency IRNA that around 40 Iranians would be deported on Sunday from Phoenix, Arizona.
Among those being deported are two gay men who face the death penalty in Iran, where homosexuality can be punishable by death, according to the American Immigration Council, an advocacy organization representing them.
The two men are currently held in an Arizona immigration detention center, and legal efforts to prevent their deportation are still underway.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the deportation plans.
