TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the conflict in Iran and other issues over the phone on Monday. Trump revealed that the two leaders talked about the Ukraine crisis and the recent conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran.
Trump described it as a "very good" phone call and claimed that Putin wanted "to be helpful" in the Middle East.
"We had a very good talk and he wants to be very constructive," Trump said in a press conference in Florida, as reported by Xinhua.
According to Trump, the two spoke about the near-half-decade conflict between Russia and Ukraine during their first phone call since Washington and Tel Aviv launched a series of attacks on Iran on February 28.
Separately, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed that Putin had a telephone conversation with Trump for about an hour at the request of the US. The two leaders had not spoken on the phone since late December last year.
Ushakov stated that Putin proposed a quick political and diplomatic settlement to the conflict in Iran, considering his contacts with Iranian leaders and Gulf states.
Meanwhile, Trump was reported to provide his assessment of the developments in the US-Israeli military operations.
Ushakov described the phone conversation as "frank and businesslike."
In addition to the conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war, the two leaders also touched on other global dynamics.
They also mentioned Venezuela "in the context of the situation in the global oil market," Ushakov said.
On the same day, Putin also warned that tensions in the Middle East could have extensive impact on the global economy, especially the energy market.
He said Russia had "repeatedly warned that attempts to destabilize the situation in the Middle East will inevitably jeopardize" the global energy market, raise prices, and restrict supply.
