U.S. Issues Travel Warning for Indonesia; Papua on 'Do Not Travel' List

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States (U.S.) has issued a travel warning for Indonesia on April 30, 2025, particularly the Papuan region, citing safety concerns. At the end of April, the U.S. Department of State stated that Indonesia has been classified as a Level 2 Travel Advisory, or "Exercise Increased Caution," due to an increased risk of "terrorism and natural disasters."

However, some regions in Indonesia have been labeled with the highest travel warning level, at a Level 4 or "Do Not Travel." It is advised to avoid Central Papua and Highland Papua, especially Jayawijaya in Highland Papua, as well as Nabire, Timika, and Mimika in Central Papua.

"In Central Papua and Highland Papua, violent demonstrations and conflict could result in injury or death to U.S. citizens," the Department of State website said. "Avoid demonstrations and crowds. Armed separatists may kidnap foreign nationals."

Reported by People, this alertness began in February 2025 when students across the country started protesting against several policies enacted by President Prabowo Subianto.

Travelers are also warned that the U.S. government has limited ability to assist its citizens in emergency situations. Officials need special visas before visiting areas such as Central Papua and Highland Papua.

Indonesia has been a favorite for American travelers seeking a unique blend of tropical beauty, rich culture, and diverse experiences. However, recent political and social unrest has made the tourism industry unstable, according to Travel and Tour World.

Travel Warning to Papua New Guinea

Furthermore, a day before the travel advisory for Indonesia was issued, the Department of State announced that the neighboring country of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, had received a Level 3 "Reconsider Travel" advisory. Papua New Guinea borders eastern Indonesia.

According to the Department of State, travelers are advised to reconsider their trips due to crime, civil unrest, and piracy. "Exercise increased caution due tokidnapping, unexploded ordnance, inconsistent availability of healthcare services, and potential for natural disasters."
