Ujung Kulon National Park Identifies Footprints of 3 New Javan Rhino Calves

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ujung Kulon National Park has identified three new individuals of the Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) through footprints and a camera trap. The Director General of Natural Resource and Ecosystem Conservation (KSDAE) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Satyawan Pudyatmoko, stated that the discovery of the footprints of the new Javan rhinoceros calf in Ujung Kulon is supported by the implementation of a fully protected area system, which involves the closure of the Ujung Kulon Peninsula from general human activities.

"Conservation remains the key to saving the Javan rhinoceros species from extinction," said Satyawan in a written statement on Saturday, May 4, 2025.

The first individual was identified through a camera trap by the reviewing team on March 30, 2025 in the southern part of the Ujung Kulon Peninsula. In the recording, the mother was seen with a female Javan rhinoceros calf whose body posture almost resembled that of the mother. The female calf is over 2 years old.

The second individual was found in the same location on April 3, 2025. The camera recorded a male Javan rhinoceros estimated to be no more than 3 years old. The small rhinoceros horn has already emerged, but its overall physical condition is still being studied by the team.

The footprints of the third individual were found on April 20 in an area that is one of the largest rhinoceros concentration areas south of the Ujung Kulon Peninsula. The size of the footprint is 19-20 centimeters. It is suspected to be 4-6 months old.

According to Satyawan, the discovery of individuals shows the effectiveness of the 'Spatially explicit model' system, as cameras were systematically placed in 35 clusters. There are 4 camera traps in each cluster, making it more potential to capture the latest tracks.

The Javan rhinoceros is a rare species protected by the Indonesian Government based on Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. P.106/MENLHK/SETJEN/KUM.1/12/2018. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has included this species in the list of critically endangered animals. This means the risk of extinction is very high.
