Waskita Karya Works on Facility Development at Timor-Leste Airport

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk. has started building new facilities at President Nicolau Lobato International Airport (PNLIA) in Dili, Timor-Leste. The project kicked off with a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, May 20.

"The project, expected to cost US$72.6 million or about Rp1.1 trillion, is slated to finish in 2028," Ari Asmoko, Waskita Karya's Director of Operations I, said in a statement on Wednesday, May 21.

Ari said the project highlights the Timor-Leste government's strong confidence in Waskita Karya. He added that it's a big step for the company as it expands into overseas markets, especially in air transportation infrastructure.

"Being the only Indonesian state-owned company chosen to handle PNLIA facilities in Timor-Leste, we're fully committed to getting this done on time and with top-notch quality," he said.

For this project, Waskita will extend the airport's runway to 2,100 meters and add safety zones at least 90 meters long on each end to boost flight safety.

Ari pointed out that a major part of Waskita Karya's work includes building an Air Traffic Control Tower (ACT) to better manage air traffic and improve efficiency. "This tower is key to improving flight control around Dili and nearby areas," he said.

Waskita Karya will also construct a taxiway for smoother aircraft movement around the airport, along with an apron—or aircraft parking area—to expand the airport's capacity for planes. To enable nighttime flights, Waskita will install an Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system.

"These upgrades at PNLIA are all about increasing flight capacity and safety, and Waskita Karya will focus on getting every detail right," Ari said.

Waskita Karya previously worked on Suai Airport in Timor-Leste. "We're thankful to the Timor-Leste government for trusting us again to take on their projects," Ari said.
