What to Know About U.S. TikTok Ban as Trump Extends Sale Deadline

5 hours ago 1

TikTok users in the United States are able to access the application for at least a few months after Trump’s administration decided to temporarily delay the TikTok ban for another 75 days.

My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress,” Trump wrote on TruthSocial, as quoted by  Mashable, April 4, 2025.

The delay was announced just a day before the ban was to take effect on Saturday, April 5.

Ownership Distribution

As of April 5, 2025, there was still no certainty from TikTok regarding the requirements set by the United States for them to continue operating. If this deal is reached, it is predicted that there will be a distribution of ownership with three parties.

The plan involves 50 percent ownership by unnamed American investors. One-third stake for existing ByteDance investors and 19.9 percent of the shares specifically for ByteDance. This method is seen as a way to license the TikTok algorithm from ByteDance.

China Rejects the TikTok Deal in the U.S.

Quoted from Antara, Chinese authorities signaled rejection for the separation of TikTok assets in the United States due to the new import tariffs announced by the American government on Chinese goods. This deal was almost finalized on April 2, 2025. It includes a plan to separate TikTok operations in America into a new U.S.-based company, the majority of which will be owned by American investors.

If the deal is reached, the parent company ByteDance, which is based in China, will still hold 20 percent of the shares in the new ownership structure.

Trump Reviews the Proposal

Trump is reported to have reviewed a proposal from a consortium of American investors, including Oracle, Blackstone, and Andreessen Horowitz, on Wednesday, April 2. The proposal has become the strongest candidate for the acquisition deal of TikTok. Other parties interested in this proposal include Amazon, Perplexity, the Project Liberty consortium owned by billionaire Frank McCourt, Walmart, AppLovin, and others.

Tariff Reduction if China Agrees

Before the announcement of Trump’s sweeping import tariffs, Trump said he would give tariff reduction to China if the government agreed on the TikTok deal. "China is going to have to play a role in that, possibly in the form of an approval and I think they'll do that," Trump told reporters on Wednesday, March 26, 2025.

Previously, Apple and Google removed TikTok from their app stores on January 19, after a law banning the Chinese-owned video-sharing app from being used in the United States.
