Safest Countries in South America

To determine the safest countries in South America, the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) analyzed the level of peacefulness occurring in 163 independent states and territories worldwide. Using data from Nomad Capitalist and Global Citizen Solutions, here is the list of Latin America’s safest countries.

1. Argentina - GPI Score: 1.855

Argentina stands out as the most peaceful nation in Latin America, earning the highest Global Peace Index (GPI) score in the region. Its reputation for tranquility, paired with a low threat of terrorism, positions Argentina as a prime destination for international travelers. Adding to its appeal, the country boasts one of South America's finest healthcare systems, offering world-class medical services and facilities that enhance both the travel experience and quality of life.

2. Uruguay - GPI Score: 1.893

Often cited as one of the safest countries in South America, Uruguay offers a sense of security rooted in its strong and stable democracy, benefiting both locals and visitors alike.

The country’s well-regarded governance is reflected in its impressive position on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, highlighting a commitment to integrity and accountability.

What’s more, Uruguay continues to stand out with significantly lower rates of violent crime compared to its neighbors, reinforcing its reputation as a peaceful and trustworthy haven.

3. Chile - GPI Score: 1.978

Backed by a well-organized and effective police force, Chile has earned a reputation as one of Latin America’s safest countries. Dedicated tourist police units are a common sight at popular attractions, adding to this sense of security and ensuring travelers feel protected throughout their journey.

Beyond safety, Chile’s rising economic success has sparked significant improvements in quality of life, enhancing everything from modern security infrastructure and dependable public transit to smooth, high-quality roads that make getting around a breeze.

4. Paraguay - GPI Score: 2.004

Despite being an overlooked travel destination, Paraguay quietly ranks among the safest countries in South America, largely thanks to its efficient and reliable law enforcement. Visitors can explore major attractions with peace of mind, as petty crimes remain uncommon in these areas. What truly sets Paraguay apart is the warmth of its people, who are always eager to lend a hand.

5. Bolivia - GPI Score: 2.009

Bolivia’s dedicated efforts to develop traveler-friendly destinations have paid off, securing its place as one of the safest countries in South America. While safety concerns may occasionally arise outside tourist zones, major attractions remain largely unaffected, with notably low rates of violent crime. Today, travelers can confidently wander through the vibrant streets of La Paz, marvel at the otherworldly Uyuni Salt Flats, or soak in the serenity of Lake Titicaca in confidence.

6. Peru - GPI Score: 2.009

As one of the world’s best cultural destinations this year, Peru places great importance on its thriving tourism industry, especially in iconic regions like Cusco and the Sacred Valley. These bold investments are paving the way for an even greater influx of curious travelers eager to uncover Peru’s rich heritage.

7. Ecuador - GPI Score: 2.572
