80,000 Palestinians Gather for Eid al-Adha Prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tens of thousands of Palestinians performed Eid al-Adha prayers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, in the occupied West Bank on Friday, June 6, 2025. The worship was carried out despite strict restrictions from Israel and a grim atmosphere triggered by the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

According to local estimates as reported by Anadolu, about 80,000 Palestinians gathered at the third-holiest mosque of Islam, entering and exiting while chanting takbir.

Israeli police forces were heavily deployed inside and around the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and the Old City before, during, and after the prayers.

However, many Palestinians from the occupied West Bank were unable to attend the Eid al-Adha prayers in Jerusalem due to movement restrictions by Israel.

Many Palestinians who were barred from entering the mosque by Israeli orders were seen praying outside its gates.

However, the usual spirit of Eid al-Adha celebration was absent. The atmosphere in Jerusalem was calm as the city grappled with the impact of Israel's ongoing genocide war in the Gaza Strip.

Israel, refusing international calls for a ceasefire, has been carrying out genocidal attacks in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,700 Palestinians, mostly women and children.

Aid agencies have warned of the risk of famine among over 2 million inhabitants of the enclave, especially among the elderly and children.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
