'A Minecraft Movie' Powers to No. 2 Spot in Video Game Film Openings

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A Minecraft Movie has shattered box office records, raking in US$301 million (around Rp5 trillion) worldwide within just three days of its release.

This milestone positions it as the second highest-grossing video game adaptation during an opening weekend, trailing only behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which debuted with US$377 million.

The film premiered in U.S. theaters on Friday, April 4, 2025. According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday, April 6, 2025, it earned US$157 million domestically and US$144 million internationally during its debut weekend.

This makes A Minecraft Movie the second highest-grossing film of the year after Captain America: Brave New World which earned US$410 million after eight weeks on the big screen.

Citing Variety, the largest markets for A Minecraft Movie outside of the United States and Canada are the United Kingdom with US$19.9 million, China with US$14.5 million dollars, Mexico with US$11.2 million, and Germany with US$10.6 million dollars.

The production cost of A Minecraft Movie itself was US$150 million dollars, not including global marketing expenses.

“A Minecraft Movie’s decade long journey to the screen was overseen with great care by WBP’s Jesse Ehrman and his team, and we are thrilled their efforts have resulted in such a tremendous response.” said Warner Bros. film studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy in their statement.

Synopsis of A Minecraft Movie

A Minecraft Movie is a film adapted from the video game Minecraft. The film revolves around four people who are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal to the Overworld, a magical cubic land that thrives on imagination.

The Overworld allows them to create anything they imagine. To return home, they must master the peculiarities of their new reality while embarking on a journey with unexpected expert artisans.

The film stars Jason Momoa, Jack Black, Jennifer Coolidge, and Danielle Brooks. Jack Black plays Steve, who is very eager to become a miner. Steve teams up with Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison (Jason Momoa), broker Dawn (Danielle Brooks), and orphans Henry (Sebastian Hansen) and Natalie (Emma Myers) to stop the villainous piglin Malgosha (Rachel House), who rules the Nether dimension and is trying to destroy the Overworld.

A Minecraft Movie was directed by Jared Hess and written by the screenplay writers Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta.

The film will be released in Indonesian cinemas starting Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
