Acid Attack Victim Andrie Yunus Undergoes Third Eye Surgery

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) has issued a new medical update on Andrie Yunus, a human rights activist with the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (KontraS) who was injured in an acid attack earlier this month.

Andrie has now undergone a third operation on his right eye, which was performed on March 28, 2026.

In a written statement issued on Tuesday, March 31, RSCM Legal and Public Relations Manager Yoga Nara said doctors found no signs of infection during the procedure and reported that Andrie was experiencing only minimal pain.

However, the medical team also discovered additional damage to the eyeball.

“During the operation, it was found that the corneal surface was thinning and there was leakage in the wall of the eyeball,” Yoga said.

To prevent further damage, doctors plan to patch the eyeball using membrane tissue taken from the patient’s thigh, which will then be covered with conjunctival tissue.

RSCM said Andrie’s right eye has also been temporarily sewn shut to protect the eye and help preserve its shape during the healing process. The closure is expected to remain in place for around four months.

After that period, the hospital’s medical team will carry out further evaluations to determine the next stage of treatment.

Aside from the eye injury, RSCM said Andrie’s other wounds have shown improvement, with most of them having closed and dried.

Andrie, KontraS’s Deputy Coordinator for External Affairs, was attacked with acid by two unidentified assailants on the night of March 12, 2026, at around 11:37 p.m. local time, on Jalan Salemba I Talang in Central Jakarta.

He was taken to the emergency room at RSCM shortly after midnight on March 13, suffering burns to his face, neck, chest, back, and both arms, as well as impaired vision in his right eye.

Hospital officials said he sustained burns over more than 20 percent of his body.
