Bank Indonesia: Rupiah Banknotes Bearing Purbaya's Signature Still Valid

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bank Indonesia (BI) said the 2026 rupiah banknotes bearing the signatures of former Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa and former BI Governor Perry Warjiyo remain valid. This statement was made in response to the widespread discourse on social media about collectors seeking rupiah banknotes bearing Purbaya's signature.

Bank Indonesia Communications Department Head Ramdan Denny Prakoso said the rupiah notes were produced with a predetermined printing process and remain the legal tender in Indonesia. "The change in the Minister of Finance or Governor of Bank Indonesia does not affect the validity of the rupiah banknotes that have been produced and circulated," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.

Finance Minister and BI Governor's signatures on rupiah banknotes are regulated in Currency Law Number 7 of 2011, which was later amended by Law Number 4 of 2023 on Developing and Strengthening of the Financial Sector (P2SK). Therefore, Bank Indonesia stated that the signatures listed are those of the Finance Minister and the BI Governor in office during the rupiah banknotes' determination and production process.

The next batch of the rupiah banknotes will use the signature of the new Finance Minister and BI Governor, Suahasil Nazara and Destry Damayanti, respectively.

Purbaya served as Finance Minister for about a year before being removed on Monday, September 14, 2026. Perry Warjiyo resigned at the end of July 2026, two years before his term as Governor of Bank Indonesia ended.
