Taylor Swift to Receive First-Ever Artist Director Honor at 2026 MTV VMAs

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taylor Swift is set to receive the inaugural Artist Director Honors at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, recognizing her work directing music videos and other visual projects.

The new award was announced on September 21, ahead of the ceremony on September 27. It recognizes artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music videos and visual storytelling, as well as those with an influential body of directorial work and a distinct creative style.

What Is the Artist Director Honors?

The Artist Director Honors is a new MTV VMA award introduced for the 2026 ceremony. According to Paramount’s official announcement, the award celebrates artists who have developed their own directorial voice while pushing creative boundaries through music videos and other visual projects.

Swift will be the first recipient of the award. She has directed several of her own music videos, including “The Man,” “cardigan,” “willow,” “Anti-Hero,” “Bejeweled,” “Lavender Haze” and “Fortnight.” Her directing credits also include “All Too Well: The Short Film.”

How Did Taylor Swift Start Her Directing Career?

Swift began directing her own music videos before gradually expanding into longer visual projects. “The Man,” released in 2020, marked her solo directorial debut. The video used satire to explore gender expectations in the music industry.

In 2021, Swift directed “All Too Well: The Short Film,” a visual project based on her song “All Too Well.” The film later won Best Direction, Best Longform Video and Video of the Year at the 2022 MTV VMAs.

Swift is now a seven-time nominee for Best Direction at the VMAs and has won the category four times, according to the official announcement. Her directing credits also include “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite,” among her latest projects.

Taylor Swift Has Nine Nominations at the 2026 MTV VMAs

According to Billboard.com, Swift will also compete in nine categories at the 2026 MTV VMAs. According to the official nominations announcement, she is nominated for Video of the Year and Artist of the Year, as well as Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Choreography and Best Visual Effects.

Her nominations are led by “The Fate of Ophelia,” which is nominated in several categories, while “Opalite” is nominated for Best Direction. Swift currently has 30 Moon Person awards and is among the leading nominees for this year’s ceremony.

The 2026 MTV VMAs will be hosted by Snoop Dogg and air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 27, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS. The ceremony will also be simulcast on MTV and streamed on Paramount+ in the United States, with the show available globally on Paramount+ and MTV the following day.
