TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A tectonic earthquake shook the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Simeulue, Aceh, on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at 02:48:52 AM local time, according to Tempo.co. The analysis from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) shows that the earthquake had an updated magnitude of M5.9.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 2.03 N; 96.71 E, precisely in the sea at a distance of 62 km southeast of Sinabang, Aceh, at a depth of 30 km.
The Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, stated in a written statement on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, that considering the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, this earthquake is a shallow earthquake due to subduction activities of tectonic plates. The analysis of the source mechanism shows that the earthquake has an upward movement mechanism (thrust fault).
BMKG stated that this earthquake had an impact and was felt in Simeulue Regency with an intensity scale of III-IV MMI, which means that the vibrations were felt significantly inside homes and seemed like a passing truck. In South Aceh Regency, Subulussalam City, Singkil Regency, North Nias Regency, the earthquake was felt at an intensity scale of III MMI. Meanwhile, in Karo Regency and Southwest Aceh Regency, it was felt at a scale of II-III MMI. Modeling results indicate that this earthquake does not have the potential for a tsunami.
As of 03:15 AM local time, BMKG's monitoring results have not shown any aftershock earthquake activity. BMKG urges the public to avoid damaged or cracked buildings due to the earthquake, to remain calm, and not to be influenced by unverified rumors.
