TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Center for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BBMKG) Region III Denpasar forecasts high waves of up to six meters in the waters off southern Bali from August 5 to 8, 2026.

"Caused by an active Australian monsoon," Luh Nyoman Didik Tri Utami, a BBMKG forecaster, said on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

She explained that this activity triggers consistent strong winds blowing southward, with speeds forecast to reach 25 knots, or approximately 46 kilometers per hour.

Strong winds blowing over the open waters of the Indian Ocean—unimpeded—transfer energy intensively to the water's surface, she noted.

Consequently, this pushes the sea surface to form higher waves as they approach shallower waters.

In addition to the waters off southern Bali—where wave heights of 4–6 meters are forecast—similar conditions are expected during the same period in the southern part of the Lombok Strait, Didik said.

Meanwhile, wave heights in other areas, such as the Badung Strait and the southern part of the Bali Strait, are forecast to reach 2–4 meters.

High waves of 1.25–2.5 meters are also expected in the northern part of Lombok Strait.

BBMKG Denpasar explained that these wind and wave conditions pose risks to maritime safety. Therefore, ferry operators are urged to remain vigilant regarding wind speeds reaching 21 knots and wave heights reaching 2.5 meters.

Furthermore, barge operators are advised to exercise caution when wind speeds reach 16 knots and wave heights reach 1.5 meters.

Fishers are also advised to remain alert to wind speeds exceeding 15 knots (approximately 27 kilometers per hour) and wave heights reaching 1.25 meters. They urge the public to monitor the latest weather information from BMKG, whether via the social media accounts @infobmkg and @bmkgbali or the Info BMKG app.
