TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has successfully repatriated the body of Rizal Sampurna, an Indonesian national from Banyuwangi, East Java, who died of a heart attack in Cambodia. He was a victim of human trafficking.
According to a statement from the ministry, issued in Jakarta on Monday, May 12, 2025, Rizal's body arrived at Surabaya's Juanda International Airport on Sunday evening at 7:30 PM WIB and was immediately transported to his hometown in Banyuwangi.
The Cambodian police had informed the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh of Rizal’s death on March 17, 2025.
In response, the embassy immediately sent a diplomatic note to Cambodian authorities, urging them to identify the company employing the deceased and hold them accountable.
Rizal, who was an Indonesian migrant worker, had worked as an administrator for an online scam operation in Cambodia and is believed to have been a victim of human trafficking.
The Cambodian police eventually located the company involved, and after negotiations, the company agreed to take responsibility for the repatriation of Rizal’s remains.
Upon arrival in his hometown, Rizal's body was handed over to his family. A representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended condolences and outlined the steps taken during the repatriation process
In light of this case, the Indonesian government has urged citizens to be cautious when accepting suspicious job offers, which could lead to exploitation by fraudulent online companies.
Kemlu also reminded the public to follow the proper procedures and mechanisms when seeking employment abroad.
Furthermore, Indonesia will continue to push for stricter enforcement of the law against fraudulent companies operating in Cambodia.
As of 2024, more than 131,000 Indonesian nationals are residing in Cambodia with legal permits. The Banteay Meanchey province has the second-highest concentration of Indonesians, following Preah Sihanouk, with over 36,500 Indonesians living there.
