How Jokowi Set Up the 'Solo Wailing Wall' Tour

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On a scorching Friday afternoon, March 6, 2026, Joko Widodo emerged from behind a carved wooden door on the veranda of his house in the Sumber village, Banjarsari subdistrict, Solo, Central Java. The seventh president of the Republic of Indonesia was preparing to leave for the mosque to perform Friday prayers. For a moment he sat on a wooden chair that his aide, Pol. Comr. Syarif Muhammad Fitriansyah, had placed there earlier.

Jokowi, wearing a white shirt that covered his pale body after suffering from allergies and rashes, said little. He simply thanked the dozens of visitors willing to queue behind the gate of his house. “Thank you for waiting,” said the former mayor of Solo as he leaned back in the wooden chair.

Members of the Presidential Security Detail ushered the line of visitors closer to Jokowi’s chair. Tempo attempted to join the group of guests. From up close, part of Jokowi’s dry facial skin was shaded by a white cap bearing the “Swoosh” logo of Nike. Beside Jokowi’s chair stood an empty seat prepared for visitors. If a group arrived, those who did not get a chair could pose standing behind Jokowi’s seat.

Throughout the photo session, Jokowi remained still. He merely returned greetings with the tip of his fingers after each photograph. One of the rules for visiting Jokowi’s house is that guests may not engage him in conversation and may only shake his hands. Security personnel also forbid visitors from bringing bags. Entering Jokowi’s yard, they are allowed to carry only their mobile phones.
