Indonesia Bids to Host 2027 Sudirman Cup

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Youth and Sports Dito Ariotedjo aims to make Indonesia host the 2027 Sudirman Cup. He has requested the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) and Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports Taufik Hidayat to make an offer at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Congress. "The congress is planned to be held in China. We have applied to participate in the bidding for the 2027 Sudirman Cup," he said at the PBSI training center in Cipayung, East Jakarta, on Monday, April 21, 2025.

The last time Indonesia hosted the Sudirman Cup was in the 1989 inaugural event, where the Indonesian team emerged as the champion. "The BWF has a sole candidate for the next president. He met with me and asked for support, so when the BWF President returns to Asia, I will ask for Indonesia to be allowed to host," he said.

According to the young Golkar politician, the Sudirman Cup has a strong connection with Indonesia, thus making it deserving of hosting the event. "The offer to host the Sudirman Cup or the Thomas-Uber Cup. I believe this is one of the strategies to create enthusiasm, spirit, motivation, and to reignite the badminton ecosystem," said Dito.

He stated that the Youth and Sports Ministry is committed to supporting the development of badminton in Indonesia as one of the potential sports contributing medals at the Olympics. "I am confident that if we can host the Sudirman Cup, it will increase the athletes' motivation and improve the badminton ecosystem. Once again, I trust the athletes because I know that the public has high expectations," he said.

After watching a simulation match of the Sudirman Cup at the PBSI training center in Cipayung, Dito advised the PBSI officials to ensure the needs of the athletes during the competition in Xiamen, China. He believes that the Sudirman Cup can help motivate and inspire to medal in the 2028 Olympics. "Our commitment in the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, especially with the Deputy Minister coming from the badminton field, makes this the right time to restore the glory of badminton," he added.
