TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is currently exploring a partnership to develop artificial intelligence (AI) education curriculum with the University of Tokyo from Japan. Komdigi's Deputy Minister Nezar Patria discussed steps to improve digital skills with Yutaka Matsuo, a professor from the Department of Technology Management for Innovation (TMI) at the University of Tokyo, at the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

As cited from Antara, Nezar stated that Matsuo offered the development of several technical aspects. "The partnership in developing AI education curriculum is very interesting," Nezar said during the meeting.

Yutaka Matsuo is one of the leading figures in the AI industry in Japan, with primary capabilities in deep learning, web mining, and AI applications for daily needs. The TMI department where Matsuo teaches is known to focus on technology management for innovation. The institution combines technical and management approaches to create social value through technology.

According to Nezar, Matsuo opens opportunities for Indonesia to emulate Japan, especially in strengthening AI-based business solutions. "Those who have received AI education can create startups that directly solve community problems," he said.

The meeting between representatives of Komdigi and TMI of the University of Tokyo on Tuesday was still in the early stages. Both institutions will continue to discuss the development of AI education curriculum.

Nezar is optimistic that TMI will welcome the partnership offer with the Indonesian Government. Matsuo, an AI technology expert who has long been an advisor to the Japanese Government, is considered capable of bridging the gap between industry needs and AI-based technological solutions.

In addition to partnership in the field of AI education, Komdigi is also accelerating the preparation of AI regulations in Indonesia. Nezar mentioned that the institution is currently reviewing the draft regulations and engaging with stakeholders from various agencies.

The government aims to finalize the regulations in the third quarter of 2025. Global trend changes, such as the emergence of agentic AI, are also considered in the regulation development process.
