Indonesia's Prabowo Pays Tribute to Pope Francis's Legacy

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto reflected on the figure of Pope Francis in his expression of condolences following the Holy Father's passing on Monday morning, April 21, 2025.

Through his official Instagram account, Prabowo conveyed his condolences upon receiving news of Pope Francis's death. He stated that the world had lost a role model with a strong commitment to peace, humanity, and brotherhood.

"Pope Francis's visit to Jakarta last year left an indelible impression not only among Catholics but within the hearts of all the people of Indonesia," Prabowo stated in a caption accompanying his Instagram post.

He uploaded two photos depicting his meeting and handshake with Pope Francis during the Pontiff's visit to Jakarta. He expressed his profound admiration for Pope Francis's message of simplicity, pluralism, advocacy for the impoverished, and the genuine care he demonstrated towards others. He affirmed that these principles would serve as an enduring example for all.

"Farewell, Pope Francis. Your message to uphold 'Unity in Diversity' will forever be engraved in our hearts," Prabowo declared.

Pope Francis undertook a four-day apostolic journey to the Indonesian archipelago from September 3 to 6, 2024. During his sojourn in Indonesia, the Pontiff held a meeting with the then President, Joko Widodo or Jokowi, visited Jakarta Cathedral and Istiqlal Mosque, and celebrated a Grand Mass at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium.
