Pope Francis Passes Away: Jakarta's Vatican Embassy to Welcome Mourners

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Apostolic Nunciature (Vatican Embassy) in Jakarta will receive mourners for Pope Francis starting from Tuesday, April 22, 2025. The state-city representative will open their office to the public after the leader of the Catholic Church passed away on Monday, April 21.

"Tomorrow morning, the Vatican Embassy will start opening its doors for our brothers and sisters who wish to convey their condolences for the passing of the Pope," said Jakarta Archbishop Cardinal Ignatius Suharyo at Jakarta Cathedral Church on Monday.

Suharyo obtained the information from Vatican Ambassador to Indonesia Piero Pioppo. The Vatican Embassy for Indonesia is located at Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur No. 18, Central Jakarta.

According to Suharyo, the Vatican Embassy for Indonesia will also put out the official statement on the passing of Pope Francis tomorrow. "We can only convey on technicality right now,” said Suharyo.

In addition, Suharyo mentioned that the Vatican will hold a nine-day mourning period following the pope’s death, with his funeral held after the mourning period.

The Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, announced the passing of 88-year-old Pope Francis from Casa Santa Marta.

"Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church," said Cardinal Farrell, as quoted from the Vatican's website on Monday, April 21, 2025.

Along with the statement, Cardinal Kevin also conveyed the Vatican's gratitude for Pope Francis. "With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God."

Pope Francis passed away one day after Easter Sunday. The Pope conveyed several messages through an aide, while the Argentinian man briefly appeared on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

Prior to his passing, doctors advised Pope Francis to limit his activities; thus, he did not lead the Easter Mass in the Vatican. However, he still attended the end of the event to give the Urbi et Orbi blessing to the city and the world and convey a message of peace.
