TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s men’s doubles pair Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani advanced to the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Masters 2026 after edging past Malaysia’s Nur Moh Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Klong in a three-game match at Istora Senayan on Thursday, January 22.
The Indonesians rallied to win 19–21, 21–16, 21–17 after dropping the opening game despite holding a late three-point lead at 19–16. Their Malaysian opponents capitalized on a lapse in focus, scoring five consecutive points to take the first game.
Sabar and Reza responded strongly in the second game, playing more aggressively and maintaining control for most of the set. Although Azriyn and Tan closed the gap from 16–10 to 16–15, the Indonesians held their nerve to seal the game 21–16 and force a decider.
The final game unfolded as a tightly contested duel, with both pairs trading points until 18–17. Sabar and Reza then closed the match with three straight points to secure victory.
Reza acknowledged their struggles early in the match.“In the first game, we waited too long and lost focus at crucial points, which cost us,” he said, as quoted by the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) on Thursday.
He added that they changed their approach in the second game. “We were more willing to take the initiative, and that helped us turn things around,” Reza said.
The win was particularly significant as Sabar was not in full condition. He suffered a nosebleed and dizziness during the third game, especially at the interval, forcing the pair to dig deep to finish the match.
In the quarterfinals, the fifth-seeded Indonesians will face another Malaysian pair, Man Wei Chong and Kai Wun Tee. The two teams have met six times, with Sabar and Reza holding a 5–1 head-to-head advantage.
