Indonesia to Build One Million Affordable Vertical Housing Units under Prabowo

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto has set a target to build one million units of affordable vertical housing in the first year of his presidency.

He announced this commitment during a state address at Parliament House in Singapore on Monday, witnessed by Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and senior officials from both countries.

"I am proud to announce that I have received reports that this year we will build one million affordable vertical housing units," President Prabowo said in his speech, which was broadcast through the President's Secretariat channel in Jakarta, as reported by Antara on Monday, June 16, 2025.

He explained that the policy was inspired by Singapore’s successful public housing program, which he considers a regional benchmark. "I have always admired Singapore's success, especially in providing housing for all its citizens. In real life, we are allowed to imitate best practices. This is what I call copy with pride," he said.

Prabowo emphasized that his administration would expand on the affordable housing efforts initiated by Indonesia's 6th President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and 7th President, Joko Widodo, scaling up the program and accelerating its implementation.

To support this initiative, the government has partnered with investors from Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The construction will be concentrated in Jakarta, including in the former DPR Kalibata complex in South Jakarta.

The program primarily targets millennials and Gen Z, many of whom are struggling to afford homes or even rental units in the capital due to soaring property prices.

Hashim S. Djojohadikusumo, the President's Special Envoy for Climate and Energy, previously stated that the housing program also aims to address inequality, which has pushed many young people to reside in outlying areas such as Serang and Purwakarta.

As part of its broader goal to build three million homes, the government is also preparing strategic state-owned land for development. This includes a 30-hectare plot managed by the State Secretariat in Kemayoran and a 41-hectare area under the Ministry of Defense.
