Indonesia to Develop Kertajati Airport into Aircraft Maintenance Hub

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is planning to develop an aircraft maintenance and overhaul, as well as an Aerospace Park, in West Java International Airport, or Bandara Kertajati, Majalengka. The plan was announced during the signing of the Head of Agreement (HoA) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PT GMF AeroAsia, PT BIJB, and the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi stated that this project is an effort by the government to strengthen the national aviation industry. According to him, Kertajati Airport has the advantage of location and a huge industrial potential.

"The development plan for MRO and Aerospace Park is expected to become the foundation for technical self-reliance and competitiveness of the national aviation industry," said Dudy Purwagandhi in a written statement on Thursday, April 24, 2025.

However, he emphasized that the project still requires strong synergy between the central government, regions, state-owned enterprises, and the private sector to be realized. "This is still in the initial stage. We are ready to support, including in terms of connectivity and policy harmonization across sectors," he said.

The Kertajati Aircraft Maintenance Center (KAMC) area is planned to be built on a land area of 84.2 hectares, and will be part of Kertajati Aerocity, covering an area of 3,480 hectares. The government considers the existence of this integrated MRO facility to be important in reducing the operating costs of airlines and dependency on aircraft maintenance abroad. Currently, about 46 percent of the national fleet still undergoes service abroad.

Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) also welcomed this plan. AHY stated that with the right orchestration, Kertajati can develop into an international standard aerocity and become part of the global aerospace industry ecosystem.

"If we can enter the global aerospace industry, Indonesia's contribution in this sector will be stronger," said AHY. The scope of cooperation in this MoU includes the preparation of a master plan, the development of partnership models, the acceleration of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) formation, and the mapping of regulations and potential fiscal and non-fiscal incentives.
