TEMPO.CO, JakartaWithin seven days of its premiere on Monday, March 31, 2025, Jumbo records history as the highest-grossing Indonesian animated film of all time after garnering one million viewers by Sunday.

The film, produced by Visinema Studios, surpasses previous record-breaker Si Juki The Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir (2017), which garnered 642,312 viewers. No Indonesia-owned animated film has been able to reach those numbers for eight years, until Jumbo.

The accomplishment makes Jumbo a new benchmark for Indonesian animated films, as well as opening up greater opportunities for the national animation industry.

Social Media Support Echoes for Jumbo

The producer of Jumbo, Anggia Kharisma, said the one million viewer mark is more than just mere statistics. "They represent love, hope, and trust from the people for our own local stories," Anggia said, as quoted from a press release received by Tempo on Monday, April 7, 2025.

Anggia conveyed that the warm reception from Indonesian viewers made the struggle of the past five years “feel incredibly meaningful.” The producer also expressed gratitude to every family and child who has made Jumbo a part of their memories, more than just entertainment.

"This is not the end, but the beginning of Jumbo's animated film journey to more hearts, in more places, and even overseas," she said.

Support for the film echoes through the audience, media, film accounts, and filmmakers. On social media, people are sharing memes and supportive posts under the ‘Buzzer Jumbo Gratisan’ movement, which translates to “Jumbo’s Free Buzzers.”

The hashtag and posts about Jumbo trended for days on X, as people campaigned for better quality entertainment for Indonesian children.

Five Years of Production, Embracing Hundreds of Creators

Jumbo is the result of five years of collaborative efforts by over 420 Indonesian animators and creators. The director and scriptwriter, Ryan Adriandhy, referred to this film as the children of the nation’s dedication to bolster the animation industry of Indonesia.

The film follows Don (voiced by Prince Poetiray and Den Bagus Sasono), a young boy proud of the fairy tale book left by his parents (Ariel NOAH and Bunga Citra Lestari). After their passing, Don is raised by Oma, voiced by Ratna Riantiarno.

Along with his two friends, Nurman (Yusuf Ozkan) and Mae (Graciella Abigail), Don plans to participate in a talent show. However, his plan is disrupted when his book is stolen by Atta (M. Adhiyat) who envies him. The adventure continues when Don meets Meri (Quinn Salman), a girl from another world seeking help to reunite with her parents (Ariyo Wahab and Cinta Laura Kiehl).

Jumbo Heading for Global Release

After its domestic success, Jumbo is expanding internationally with theatrical releases in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam starting from June 2025. The film will also be screened in several Central Asian and European countries, such as Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia (including Abkhazia and South Ossetia), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
