TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Parliament Group supporting Palestine has urged the Israeli Knesset to withdraw all laws and legislative initiatives that do not conform to its obligations under international law. The group also advocates for an immediate ceasefire declared on January 15.
The group's declaration was released in Istanbul on Saturday, April 19, 2024, after a meeting with 14 parliament speakers, including those from Turkey, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Azerbaijan, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
"We call for the implementation of the two-state solution in a reliable, sustainable, and irreversible manner, whereby two independent and sovereign states live side by side in peace and security, integrated into the region," said the Parliament Group supporting Palestine, as quoted by Anadolu.
The Parliament Group supporting Palestine also demands that the right of return for Palestinian refugees be guaranteed under international law, relevant UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative. They also support the establishment of a just and lasting peace to fulfill the rights of the Palestinian people.
“We believe that the two-state solution is the only viable option for the security of all nations and states in the region," the statement reads.
Indonesian House Speaker Puan Maharani also supported the meeting. Before the forum, Puan and several parliament speakers from like-minded countries attended a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was present at the event's opening.
Puan emphasized that participating in the inter-parliament forum reaffirms Indonesia's commitment to the Palestinian struggle.
"Indonesia has shown its support for Palestinian freedom through various means. To complement the government's efforts, the DPR has been actively engaged in parliamentary diplomacy by participating in international forums such as this one," she said, as quoted by Antara.
More than 51,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in Israel's brutal attacks since October 2023. Most of them were women and children.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants last November for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in Gaza.
