TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that any attack on Iranian commercial ships or oil tankers would trigger major retaliation against U.S. targets in the Middle East.
“Warning! Any aggression against Iranian oil tankers and commercial vessels will be met with a heavy attack against one of the American centers in the region and enemy ships,” the IRGC Navy Command said, according to Fars News Agency and reported by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
IRGC Aerospace Force Commander Majid Mousavi said Iran’s missiles and drones had already “locked onto the enemy” and awaiting orders to launch.
The warning came after the Ministry of Defence announced the deployment of Royal Navy warships to the Middle East in preparation for a possible multinational mission aimed at protecting commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer previously deployed in the eastern Mediterranean near Cyprus, will be stationed in the region and prepared to join a maritime initiative led by Britain and France if conditions permit.
Regional tensions have escalated since the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran later retaliated by targeting Israel and U.S. allies in the Gulf, while also closing the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan took effect on April 8. However, negotiations held in Islamabad have yet to produce a permanent peace agreement.
U.S. President Donald Trump later extended the ceasefire indefinitely while opening diplomatic channels aimed at finding a long-term resolution to the conflict.
Since April 13, the United States has enforced a naval blockade on Iranian maritime traffic in the strategic waterway.
Last Tuesday, Trump also announced that the U.S. military would temporarily suspend “Project Freedom” in an effort to restore freedom of navigation for commercial vessels in the area, although he stressed that the U.S. blockade would remain fully in effect.
