Jakarta Governor Calls for One-Hour Lights-Off in Support of Earth Day

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has urged residents to switch off their lights for one hour today, Saturday, April 26, 2025. He explained that this initiative is part of Earth Day observances, which fell on April 22.

Pramono called for the lights-off to take place simultaneously tonight.

"We hope today, on April 26th from 08:30 to 09:30 PM WIB (Western Indonesia Time), we request that the lights be turned off as a collective effort to care for the Earth," said Pramono in the Monas area, Gambir, Central Jakarta, on Saturday, April 26.

According to Pramono, turning off the lights for one hour in commemoration of Earth Day is a global movement. He also stated that he has instructed the ranks and employees of the Jakarta City Hall to turn off their lights starting from 08:30 PM.

Pramono further requested the Jakarta Provincial Government to quickly spread the same message to residents.

Additionally, lights will be turned off on several streets and buildings in Jakarta, including:

Central Jakarta

- Sudirman Street and MH Thamrin Street
- Medan Merdeka Street, Gerbang Pemuda Street - Asia Afrika Street
- City Hall Office
- Central Jakarta Mayor's Office
- Heroes Statue and General Sudirman Statue
- National Monument (Monas)
- Arjuna Wiwaha Statue
- Bundaran Hotel Indonesia

North Jakarta

- Yos Sudarso Street
- Perintis Kemerdekaan Street
- North Jakarta Mayor's Office

East Jakarta

- Dr. Sumarno Street
- Perintis Kemerdekaan Street
- East Jakarta Mayor's Office

West Jakarta

- Daan Mogot Street
- Kembangan Raya Street
- West Jakarta Mayor's Office

South Jakarta

- Prapanca Raya Street
- Gerbang Pemuda Street
- Asia Afrika Street
- Sudirman Street
- Rasuna Said Street
- Youth Advancement Monument, Jenderal Soedirman Street
- South Jakarta Mayor's Office

The Earth Hour movement is an action to switch off lights for 60 minutes symbolizing concern for climate change. The movement originated in 2007 in Sydney, Australia and has spread simultaneously to 190 countries.
