TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Jaya Police have expressed the readiness to hold a coordination meeting and conduct a road survey to support the proposed implementation of Car Free Night (CFN) initiated by the provincial government.
Sr. Comr. Komarudin, Traffic Director of Jakarta Metro Jaya Police, said that the police are prepared to secure any policies implemented by both central and regional governments. "There will definitely be a joint coordination meeting and survey," he said via text message on Monday, June 9, 2025.
However, the police are currently awaiting the official implementation plan for the CFN before planning specific security measures, as the proposal is still under internal discussion within the city administration. "We also don't know when, and which roads will be set for [CFN]," Komarudin added.
Previously, Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno first announced this initiative during his attendance at an art performance held at the Car Free Day (CFD) event on Jalan MH Thamrin, Central Jakarta, on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
Rano conveyed that the provincial government intends to establish CFN in the Sudirman-Thamrin area subsequent to the Jakarta Anniversary celebration on June 22. He suggested that if CFD is routinely held every Sunday morning, then CFN could potentially be implemented on Saturday nights.
He proposed that CFN commence at 10:00 PM local time. "Because many Jakarta residents exercise at night. This is also an effort to reduce carbon emissions," he said, highlighting both public health and environmental benefits.
According to him, extending the duration of vehicle-free periods will also contribute to an increase in public well-being. "With car-free day and car-free night, hopefully, the happiness and health of the people of Jakarta will increase," he remarked optimistically.
Jakarta is presently undertaking a study to identify five additional locations for CFD activities, as part of a broader strategy to mitigate carbon emissions. Rano clarified that analyses have consistently demonstrated CFD's effectiveness in reducing carbon emissions.
"Carbon emissions have proven to successfully decrease. It's just that the momentum is only one day. There is a discussion that we will make it in five locations. We are looking for [suitable areas]," he explained.
One of the areas targeted by the provincial government is North Jakarta, given the high carbon emissions in that region. "Especially North Jakarta. There are industries and factories, so the emissions and air pollution are very high. That means we have to find a place to create an area that can at least reduce carbon well," Rano concluded.
