Mount Dukono Erupts Three Times This Morning, Residents Warned

7 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The observation post for Mount Dukono reported three eruption events on Tuesday morning, December 12, 2026. The latest eruption recorded by the observation post team was at 09:52 WIT (Eastern Indonesian Time) or 07:52 WIB (Western Indonesian Time), ejecting volcanic ash up to 2,000 meters above the crater's surface.

One of the Mount Dukono Volcano Observatory (PGA) officers, Saum Amin, stated that the volcanic ash plume was drifting northwest. "At the time of this report, the eruption is still ongoing," he said in his report to the Geological Agency, shortly after the event.

The 1,087-meter-high volcano above sea level in West Halmahera, North Maluku, also erupted at 07:26 WIT with an ash column reaching approximately 400 meters. The eruption, where the ash plume drifted northwest, was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 10 millimeters and a duration of 35.87 seconds.

Less than half an hour later, as Saum stated, Mount Dukono erupted again at 07:55 WIT, with an ash column reaching 1,500 meters. The ash plume surged and drifted northwest.

As the third active volcano in Indonesia, Mount Dukono has erupted a total of 117 times since January 2026. The head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, urged local residents and tourists to refrain from activities within a four-kilometer radius from the summits of Malupang Crater and Warirang.

"Considering periodic eruptions with volcanic ash and the spread of ash following the direction and speed of the wind, the affected ashfall area is not fixed," Lana said.

Lana also urged the communities around this alert-status volcano to always have masks or nose and mouth covers available to avoid the dangers of volcanic ash.

The Geological Agency noted that the activity of this stratovolcano, located around 14 kilometers from the city of Tobelo, was triggered by tectonic activities in Halmahera Island. These dynamics are connected to the movement of the double subduction, namely the Maluku Sea Plate moving eastward beneath the Pacific Plate.
