Prabowo Hopes Pope Leo XIV Will Be a Bridge to World Peace

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has conveyed his sincere congratulations to Pope Leo XIV on his election as the Bishop of Rome and the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church. Prabowo's statement was posted on the official Instagram account of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, @presidenrepublikindonesia, on May 13, 2025.

"On behalf of the government and the people of Indonesia, I offer my sincere congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his election as the Bishop of Rome and the Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church," Prabowo wrote.

He expressed hope that the moral leadership and compassion of Pope Leo XIV would serve as a guiding light for many people amid global challenges. "May his papacy stand as a bridge to peace and unity, and inspire hope across faiths and borders alike," Prabowo stated.

In his caption, Prabowo noted that the election of the Pope is a great celebration shared by the Catholic community in Indonesia and around the world. "Congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on his ascension to the papacy," he said.

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost from the United States was elected as the highest leader of the Catholic community by the College of Cardinals during the Papal conclave. The announcement of Robert's election as the new pope was marked by the release of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney in the Vatican on Thursday, May 8, 2025, local time.

Choosing Leo XIV as his papal name, Cardinal Robert Francis became the first Pope from the United States and the second from the American continent, following Pope Francis.
