TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at the Seri Perdana complex in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on Sunday, April 6, 2025. A key focus of their meeting was US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy and its potential impact on several ASEAN member states.
Anwar shared a glimpse of the meeting on Instagram (@anwaribrahim_my), where Prabowo was seen accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. “We addressed important regional issues,” Anwar wrote in Malay on Monday, April 7, though he did not provide further details on the tariff discussion. As of Sunday evening, neither Malaysia nor Indonesia’s presidential office had issued an official statement regarding the closed-door talks.
In addition to discussing trade-related concerns, the two leaders also touched on humanitarian cooperation, particularly both countries’ joint efforts to aid earthquake victims in Myanmar.
The bilateral meeting came a day after Prabowo held a virtual discussion with four ASEAN leaders on April 5 to exchange views on Trump’s tariff measures. The participants included Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.
That discussion followed Trump’s announcement on April 2 of a sweeping reciprocal tariff policy. Under the new rules, Indonesian exports to the US are subject to a 32-percent tariff. Other ASEAN countries are also affected: Malaysia and Brunei face 24 percent, the Philippines 17 percent, Singapore 10 percent, Cambodia 49 percent, Laos 48 percent, Vietnam 46 percent, Myanmar 44 percent, and Thailand 36 percent.
